Familielied aan het Water by Anna Mikhailova

Music is an universal language. For Anna Mikhailova from Charlois is this the starting point for a very personal project “Familysong- het Familielied”:
"In case of my family every new generation was born in one place and moved to a different country to live most of their life. I felt need in belonging, support and family protection and heard silence. Since very early I consider music as my main language and I started to think what would make me to fulfil the need and what can help me to regenerate and heal myself and the answer was – familysong."

Anna is inviting families from Charlois to make in collaboration their personal familysong. The melody and the sound contain the elements, which the family would find fit their nature, depending to their roots or taste or ideology or desire to live. The text is based on the personal experience of the different generations in the family.

Peach, new activities and exhibitions are coming!

Peach is a home and exhibition space inhabited by Ghislain Amar, Anna Maria Łuczak and some other people in the south of Rotterdam. Occasionally, Peach turns into a collective and respond to various kind of situations.

Opening 'Metropolitan Iconographies. Urban Saints of Charlois' by Despina Papachristoudi and Anastasia Tsaparoglou

It's official: The 24th of june the project 'Metropolitan Iconographies. Urban Saints of Charlois' will launch! We will celebrate this moment in Koffie & Ambacht, where we will meet for a drink and you will have the possibility to meet all the saints. The creators will also be present to answer any questions you might have relating to the project.

Het Brabantse Dorp

Het nooddorp stond op de plek waar nu het Ikaziaziekenhuis, Ahoy en het winkelcentrum Zuidplein zijn. Schouwburg Zuid, de voorganger van Theater Zuidplein was tot 1966 een directe buur van de 526 noodwoningen omvattende buurtschap.

Het verdwenen nooddorp werd ooit gebouwd als gevolg van het Duitse bombardement op 14 mei 1940, waarbij 80.000 Rotterdammers huis en haard verloren. De gemeente Rotterdam liet zes nooddorpen bouwen (drie aan de Noorderkanaalweg, een in Smeetsland en een in Overschie) om hen een dak boven het hoofd te geven. Het zesde van die nooddorpen was 'Het Brabantse Dorp' in de polder tussen Charlois en Vreewijk. De krappe woninkjes moesten uiteindelijk in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw ruimte maken voor de bouw van het Ikaziaziekenhuis, Ahoy en het winkelcentrum Zuidplein. Een deel van de tweeduizend bewoners verhuisde naar Hoogvliet en Spijkenisse of een van de andere nooddorpen, waarvan dat in Overschie nog steeds bestaat.

De bewoners van het Brabantse Dorp hadden in Rotterdam geen goede naam. De bevolking was veelal arm en laag opgeleid, maar er was een sterke sociale cohesie in het dorp.

Dit project is ondersteund door het Mya Cultuurfonds en is o.a. tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met Stedelink 010, Gerwin Luijendijk en Despina Papachristoudi.

Human towers in Rotterdam and in Charlois

Human towers in Rotterdam (and in Charlois) 

Human towers will be built in Rotterdam. Cultural organization Tante Nino (aunt Nino) will bring 150 Catalonian Castellers to Rotterdam and organize the event Castellers Rotterdam in May.

The Castellers, together with more than thousand Rotterdammers, will build the Human towers (of eight stories high) on Noordereiland and Schouwburgplein. 

In the days before the event, a number of workhops are given on how to participate in building this human tower (Castell). Foundation NAC adopted one of the workshops which takes place at the Charloisse Hoofd in Charlois.
